Metallic Aso Oke – The modern Aso Oke!
Metallic Aso Oke is the Aso Oke that shines and is close to being silky. The metallic Aso Oke gained a wide acceptance because of its shimmering silky look which brought sophistication and elegance with little or no embellishment required. It is perfect for brides or party guests who want to keep it simple and save on costs of embellishment.
The emergence of Metallic Aso Oke
The art of weaving Aso Oke remained the same for decades until new materials began to emerge in the 1970s, also known as the Shine-Shine Era in the Aso Oke industry. Nylon and lurex were the shiny yarns for the seventies and this was the beginning of the vibrant era in Aso Oke, however it was not very successful in the seventies until the nylon yarns were improved upon to what we now have as ‘krown’ metallic threads in Aso Oke. These threads give an ultra-silk shine, unlike older versions of Aso Oke that are made from cotton threads, the metallic threads are responsible for this type of sheen which we find with metallic Aso Oke.
Types of Metallic Aso Oke
1. Duotone – When two different colors of metallic threads are combined on the weaving loom, they begin to contrast to give a duotone (two-tone) effect which then gives a mirror reflection with its movement around light or when twisted to form a head wrap, popularly referred to as gele in Yoruba parlance. This is the highest form of metallic Aso Oke with 100% sheen. However, a fact about combining colours for this type of metallic Aso Oke is that the farther these two colours are on the colour wheel, the more tone effect is achieved. For example, contrasting colours such as green and deep blue will give a higher tone-pop than purple and lilac
2. Monotone – When the same colour of metallic thread is combined on the weaving loom, there is no contrast seen but only a silky-sheen is achieved giving a single-tone effect also known as monotone.
The level of tone or sheen required is dependent on the style of the wearer or the look that needs to be achieved. Whichever one it is, that ultra- silk shine effect that is peculiar to Metallic Aso Oke will not be missed.
